Please be advised the annual Convention will be held from Saturday 16th – Thursday 21st January 2010. Further details and a registration form have been included with this newsletter. Working With Children Check

As you would be aware, it is a compulsory requirement for all Active teachers to gain a Police Check or Working With Children Check. Please note as a requirement to secure your exam booking, you must provide a photocopy to head office with your booking form. These can be obtained at any Police Station or Post Office. For further information please call 1300 652 879 or visit www.justice.vic.gov.au/workingwithchildren.

Exam Dance Reminder

Teachers are reminded to keep the content and music of the exam dance movements relevant to the students age. Some movements sourced from video clips and similar media may not be appropriate for inclusion in their routines.

Southern Federation of Dance wishes to congratulate the following person for gaining her Teaching Certificate during 2009.

Choreographic Competition

This day was again another great success. We had wonderful performances by participating students and the standard of work shown was varied and really interesting. Thank you to all helpers and to the teachers for encouraging your students to perform. We would also like to acknowledge the wonderful support of teachers and parents on the day who gladly give up their time to help run this event.

Membership Renewals

Membership renewals are enclosed with the November/December newsletter. Just a reminder that you must be a financial member to participate in the convention.

Member News

Some exciting news from Isolation Performing Arts studio students ~

Previous scholarship winner Brianna Anderson is currently on her second contract at the Moulin Rouge Paris and Lauren Anderson (also past scholarship winner) is currently appearing in the Wicked show at Universal Studios Japan. Also four VET Dance students received perfect study scores last year and are all receiving Premiers’ Awards in 2009.

SFD Committee 2010

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED JOINING THE SFD COMMITTEE?

A very important part of the future of Southern Federation of Dance is the commitment and enthusiasm by members to join the Committee of Management. Are you able to contribute one day a month to attend a meeting and assist at the various events throughout the year because we would love to see some new faces. The following points provide you with an idea of what to expect:

• The minimum term on the Committee is for a period of 12 months.
• You are required to attend regular meetings (approx. 4-6 weeks apart) at pre-arranged destinations during business hours. Meeting dates will be set for 12 months at the first meeting after the AGM – to help you with planning.
• You are expected to volunteer your services to assist with the running of major SFD events like the Competitions (General and Choreographic), Combined Schools Concert, Teaching Certificate Exam days, Inservices, Masterclasses, fundraising days etc, when available.

Please consider the valuable input you could make to supporting Southern Federation of Dance through your opinion and ideas. This is the perfect way to make your voice heard!!! Please contact Head Office for a nomination form if you would like to take up this opportunity.

Retiring Examiner - Janine McGrath

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge a person fundamental to the establishment and continued success of SFD – Janine McGrath is retiring as an Examiner after 23 years. As one of the organisation’s longest serving and dynamic forces behind the growth and development of the jazz syllabus, we would like to thank Janine for her experience and dedication to examining SFD students from all over Australia. Her encouraging words and enthusiasm at Masterclasses will be sadly missed.

Updated Syllabus

Southern Federation of Dance is extremely excited to advise the ongoing continuation of updated syllabus levels with the launch at the Convention of Classical levels 1 to 5 and Tap levels 7 & 8.

Classical 1 - 5
The syllabus for Classical 1 to 5 has been revised. Some existing exercises have been incorporated along with new enchainements, which is accompanied by a completely updated compilation of music. The existing levels 1 to 5 will only be covered on the express day, with the new syllabus launched on Wednesday 20th January commencing with the Classical 5 class.

These new updates are optional in 2010, but will become compulsory from 2011.

Tap 7 & 8
The Examiners have also updated levels 7 & 8 Tap - you will still recognize some exercises, but many new combinations have been included. This work will be launched on Monday 18th January, commencing with Tap 8.

These new updates are optional in 2010, but will become compulsory from 2011.

Jazz 7 & 8
A reminder to all members that from 2010 it is compulsory to enter students in Jazz 7 & 8 using the updated syllabus.

Trainee Examiner Program

Due to the considerable growth in SFD in recent years ... a number of new trainee Examiners will commence training in 2010.

Prospective Examiners are invited by a joint decision of the Board of Examiners and Committee of Management to submit a resume outlining reasons for wanting to become an Examiner and reasons they feel they would have the ability to examine. Board of Examiners and Committee of Management jointly assess resumes, taking into account past experience and qualifications. After deliberation, the prospective Examiner may be offered the opportunity to commence training. Consideration is given to potential Examiners who may have strength in one particular style, or who may be able to examine across a number of styles.

A one on one training program commences with an experienced SFD mentor who has at least 5 years examining experience in the main style to be examined. Trainee Examiners sit in at examinations for at least 20 hours, viewing a range of candidates in a variety of levels in styles they will prospectively examine, for future consistency. Additional work with their mentor away from examining to assist with formalities of report format and writing is also undertaken. If successful during the training period, their mentor will recommend to the Board of Examiners and Committee of Management for the trainee Examiner to be offered a probationary contract for a 1 year period.

Congratulations to the recently approved Trainees who you may observe attending examinations at your studio during 2010.

Exam Certificate Amendments

As per the Examination Recommendations guidelines, any teacher requesting amendments to certificates must notify the office IN WRITING of any changes and include payment of $11.00 per certificate for replacements.
Changes include:
- Candidate name spelling
- Incorrect levels
- Change of dates
- Changes needed due to illegible writing

Exam confirmation sheets should be typed or written in block letters as the writing on certificates is taken directly from these forms.
All amendments will be processed after 1st October, and collated for distribution to members via the examiner. NO AMENDMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED ON THE DAY.
Examiners may use spelling corrections offered on the day for their written reports.
